Donors cover card processing

How to read your real fee rate

Take last month’s payout report and divide what reached your bank by what donors gave. The gap is your true all-in rate, and for many organizations it is the first time that number has been written down. A treasurer who sees $9,580 arrive from $10,000 donated is paying 4.2% all-in, regardless of what the pricing page said.

Then split that gap into its two parts. Card processing on many platforms is roughly 2.9% + $0.30 (the industry Stripe-standard assumption used above). Everything above that is the platform’s cut, and that is the only part switching platforms can actually change. Anedot publishes one combined card rate instead: 3.3% + $0.30 for 501(c)(3) and Ministry, or 4.0% + $0.30 for Standard. Turn on Donor Covers Fees and your organization pays only $0.30 per gift when donors opt in.

Fee questions, answered

What fees do nonprofits actually pay on a donation?

Two separate costs that many platforms blur together. First, card processing: the cost of moving money. This calculator assumes a common industry rate of 2.9% + $0.30 per gift for your current platform’s card processing. Second, the platform fee: the percentage the software keeps on top of processing. Anedot’s published card rates combine processing into one transparent price: 3.3% + $0.30 for 501(c)(3) and Ministry accounts, or 4.0% + $0.30 for Standard.

Why does average gift size change the math?

Because of the fixed per-transaction component. The $0.30 fee on a $10 gift is 3% of the donation; on a $200 gift it is 0.15%. Organizations with many small gifts lose a meaningfully larger share to fixed fees, which is why suggested amounts that raise average gift size often help net revenue as much as changing rates.

What is Donor Covers Fees on Anedot?

When you enable Donor Covers Fees, donors can choose to cover the processing percentage. In that case, your organization pays only $0.30 per gift. Use the Yes/No control in this calculator to model monthly cost with that option turned on.

Are Anedot’s rates in this calculator the ones on pricing?

Yes. Card rates here are sourced from anedot.com/pricing: 3.3% + $0.30 for 501(c)(3) and Ministry, and 4.0% + $0.30 for Standard. Estimates assume card gifts only and exclude ACH, Bitcoin, and mixed payment methods. Always confirm live rates on the pricing page before you decide.
